ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN
Economic independence is a key element of a women’s journey towards empowerment. Swayam’s economic empowerment work is centered around providing career counselling, skill enhancement and vocational training and linkage for training and job opportunities for women survivors of violence. To support women, re-build their lives we also provide support to start a business from home. This enables women to earn between 2500 and 10,000 per month depending on the time invested.
In our two communities (Metiabruz and Diamond Harbour), Swayam runs tailoring training for women to enable them to become independent, self-reliant and find their own self. Women in the rural communities are also earning between 2000 an 13,000 per month.

FUTURE OF TOMORROW- WORK WITH CHILDREN
Children are the hidden victims of violence. Due to their home environment, children often witness violence in their homes or are subjected to violence themselves. This trauma impacts their physical and emotional well-being damages their physical & mental wellbeing. COVID adversely affected children as they were home-bound for two years and home-schooled while facing physical or emotional violence at home. To respond to their needs, Swayam provides a variety of services to children of survivors, aged between 4-18 years each year.
Individual Services include psychotherapy and play therapy for their emotional well-being. Educational Support is provided to keep children in the school system and a range of group activities to focus on interpersonal and life skills.

ABOUT US

SWAYAM is a Kolkata based women’s organisation working towards redressing and preventing discrimination and violence against women and girls, and as well as for women’s empowerment. It was established and registered as a Public Charitable Trust in Kolkata, India in 1995.

SWAYAM literally means ‘oneself’ and was set up to provide a holistic support service to women facing violence in their lives. On one hand SWAYAM facilitates the empowerment of women survivors of violence, their children and families. On the other hand, it generates discussion, debate and action in society to challenge social norms, values and systems that deem discrimination and violence against women and girls acceptable.
Swayam is working across three support centres located at Deodar Street & Metiabruz in Kolkata and at Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India.
