A significant portion of India's Northeast has experienced years of conflict, both with separatist groups fighting against the state and with ethnic groups engaged in internecine struggles. The region's remoteness, inadequate communication infrastructure, and relatively small population have meant it remains woefully underdeveloped compared to the rest of the country. Over the years, thousands of civilians and uniformed personnel have lost their lives, and livelihoods have been heavily impacted. The government's investment in security involves the deployment of the Indian Army and paramilitary forces in vulnerable areas, which is crucial. As a societal system, we can also envision a more optimistic scenario where considerable financial resources are given to education, infrastructure, and healthcare. Such investment could contribute towards long-term, sustainable change for the region.
Sunbird Trust's "Access for All" program is designed to tackle these deep-seated challenges head-on. By recognising the pivotal role of education, we aim to break the cycle of issues at their core. Our strategy is rooted in providing accessible education for all children, disrupting the hardship process. We are committed to empowering under-resourced, affordable private schools, which serve as a lifeline for underprivileged children when government schools fall short through sponsorships. This support takes two forms: school sponsorship (covering school tuition fees, hostel sponsorship fees, and nutrition sponsorship fees) and individual sponsorship (sponsoring students through college and hostel until graduation).
Our Appeal: To support the education of 40 students in Classes 11 and 12 from underprivileged communities across Northeast India under 'Access for All' by covering their hostel and tuition fees. This sponsorship would entail an estimated annual cost of approximately 50,000 INR per student, equating to around 4,200 INR monthly.
